Sex Tech: iOS 9 Update Will Allow Users to Track Sexual Activity

Soon iPhone’s everywhere will have a whole new meaning to “phone sex”. Apple’s sleep, nutrition, and fitness tracking within the Health app are going to be getting a new partner: a reproductive health tab.

Apple will be rolling out a bunch of new features with the release of the iOS 9 update. The ‘Reproductive Health’ tab will include tracking of more than just the date and time you have sex– according to a screenshot released by CNN Money, users will also be able to track basal body temperature, cervical mucous quality, menstruation, ovulation test results, and spotting.

It certainly appears that this section of the app is going to be directed more towards women than men, which is a step towards Apple being more inclusive of women after flack in the media regarding unfair representation of Health app users.

While we love the idea of tracking sexual health and including women, we feel that it is missing out on some major sexual health metrics and leaves the responsibility of keeping up with sexual health to women.

We would like to see the 9.1 version of the app include the following additions as well:

  • STD Test Tracking
    • To track when the user was last tested for sexually transmitted diseases or infections.
    • Include note section for inputting whether partner has been tested before sex or whether any possible signs or symptoms of an STD were noticed.
    • This would be a feature that both men and women can use, because both sexes should be equally responsible for getting STD tested, not solely women.
  • Contraception Tracker
    • The iOS 9 Reproductive Health section includes an option to select whether or not protection was used, but women using an IUD, taking birth control pills or injections, or wearing a birth control patch or using a diaphragm could track contraceptive usage.
    • This would be a feature that both men and women can use, because both sexes should be equally responsible for using contraception if pregnancy is undesired, not solely women.
  • STD Preventative Vaccine Tracker
    • Track whether or not you or a partner has been vaccinated for STDs.
    • Track vaccination schedules for STDs like HPV and hepatitis B (HBV) since they are available for both men and women, and require more than one dosage.
    • This could help bring more awareness to how common HPV is. This virus accounts for approximately 72 percent of all STD cases in the U.S.

Sexual health is the responsibility of everyone, regardless or whether you are a man or woman. To get tested for STDs or learn more about them go here.
