Most people believe that oral sex is “safe” sex or not sex at all. Despite that misconception, having oral sex is risky sexual behavior that puts all participants involved in jeopardy of contracting a number of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and infections. Not using dental dams, latex condoms, and other barrier methods increases that risk, especially since most STDs that can be transmitted through unprotected vaginal or anal sex can also be transmitted through unprotected oral sex. This includes oral herpes, genital herpes, genital warts (which is caused by HPV), chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV. Performing and receiving unprotected oral sex puts you in danger.
